Earth Journalism Network Asia-Pacific Media Grants 2023
The Covid-19 pandemic has exposed a human vulnerability to viral spillover and underlines the urgency of addressing intensive farming, encroachment of natural habitats, wildlife trading, and other environmental root causes.
The Earth Journalism Network's Asia-Pacific project has received generous financial support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).
In this round of media grants, we are seeking innovative ideas to strengthen public awareness of the interconnection of human, animal, and environmental health.
Proposed activities should contribute to the following objectives:
Strengthen the capacity of journalists and media organizations to produce high-quality, evidence-based, and engaging environmental stories on the consequences of human impacts on the environment and viable solutions to mitigate and respond to these impacts.
Increase high-quality content and media coverage on key environmental themes to focus public attention on the interdependence of the health and well-being of humans, and their environments.
Increase public attention to the disproportionate impacts of environmental degradation on women, the poor, youth, indigenous peoples, and other vulnerable groups and increase their access to high-quality, publicly available environmental information.
Contribute to positive changes in government policies, businesses’ environmental standards, or consumer habits for a more sustainable way of life.

With the effects of environmental degradation becoming more apparent, high-quality environmental journalism is more important than ever. However, the availability of resources for reporting has been reduced, and press freedoms have shrunk in many countries.
The Y. Eva Tan Conservation Reporting Fellowship Program has helped dozens of budding environmental journalists gain experience and establish careers as professional journalists.
The Y. Eva Tan Conservation Reporting Fellowship Program will support up to 12 fellows per year — six at their global English bureau and six at our Spanish-language bureau, Mongabay-Latam. Each cohort will consist of three fellows per bureau.

3rd Annual “Ambassador for a Day” Contest for Young People in Thailand
The 3rd annual “Ambassador for a Day” video contest is promoting gender equality in Thailand by mobilizing young people to lend their voices to the theme of “Innovation, technological change, and education in the digital age for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls”—the priority theme of the 67th session of the Commission on the Status of Women in 2023.
Ambassador for a Day is an initiative of the informal Women Ambassadors Group in Thailand and the women leaders of the United Nations, initiated by the Ambassadors of Canada and India.
This year, the UN and Australian Embassy are taking the lead in co-organizing the event with the support of host organizations from the diplomatic corps and UN system in Thailand. Young people in Thailand aged between 16 and 25 will be invited to compete for a chance to “shadow” an ambassador or UN women leader in their organizations and attend the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) International Women’s Day commemoration (IWD 2023) on 8 March 2023 in Bangkok, Thailand.
