How Startups Are Building for Underserved Communities
Technology connects the world's population but it also builds disproportionately for certain groups. This article by Rex Woodbury looked into 10 underserved communities and 10 startups building for these communities. The communities are wide-ranging—from financial aid applicants to cosplay enthusiasts, to pregnant and post-partum moms. Each startup is addressing a salient problem, one that’s likely both deeper and more widespread than most people expect.
Cambodian Youth Policy Survey Report (PDF)
Transparency International Cambodia (TI Cambodia) conducted a nationwide Youth Policy survey, which offered insights into young people’s levels of interest and knowledge of government affairs, particularly key public policies, their needs, and challenges in the areas of healthcare, education, employment, and civic involvement, and their opinions on how well the government has responded to these concerns.
This survey was conducted with 1,600 Cambodians, aged 15 to 30 years, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points. Data collection took place between November and December 2021 in 200 villages across 25 provinces of Cambodia.
Some findings: The survey indicates that young Cambodians have limited knowledge of key government strategies and policies, including the Rectangular Strategy IV, the Cambodian Sustainable Development Goals, and the 2011 National Policy on Youth Development. In terms of civic and political knowledge, more than 50% of youth were unaware that they have the right to participate in the formulation or monitoring of the development plans of their local governments.
The G20 agreed to strive to stick to the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels. The agreement was reached in Bali, Indonesia, where leaders of the world’s largest economies had gathered earlier this week for the G20 summit 2022 to discuss pressing issues.
Among the agreements reached in Bali is the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) for Indonesia, in which the US, European Union, Japan, Canada, and five European nations pledged to give the Asian nation US$20 billion.
How to Leverage Innovation to Tackle Modern Slavery
The Tech Against Trafficking Summit brought together over 160 leaders from the anti-trafficking field in Seattle, Washington, USA.
Here are some key takeaways from the summit:
We need to address the barriers that prevent the effective deployment of technology.
It is critical that technologies are built with a survivor-first and trauma-informed approach.
Data privacy is a concern, but privacy-preserving methods may offer a solution.
Technology is not a silver bullet; it must be complemented with policies and due diligence measures.
Cross-sector collaboration is vital to deploy innovation effectively.
At the summit, TAT also kicked off the third round of the Tech Against Trafficking Accelerator, which will help companies and anti-trafficking organizations develop technology solutions to tackle modern slavery.
